Overview
The caves, locally referred to as the Kino Caves or Jomo Kenyatta Caves, played an important role during the struggle for independence in Kenya and East Africa. They were used by freedom fighters as hideouts from colonial authorities—specifically the British in Kenya and the Germans in Tanzania. The site consists of three caves. The first cave served as a meeting place where Jomo Kenyatta held discussions with fellow Kenyans on matters concerning the country. The second cave was used for meetings between Jomo Kenyatta and Julius Nyerere of Tanzania. The third cave functioned as a kitchen, where Mr. Nyambu’s wife prepared meals for Kenyatta and his visitors.
